Retained fetal membranes represent one of the more common postpartum problems in mares. Management of retained fetal membranes in the mare requires prompt veterinary intervention as a delay in treatment may lead to an increased risk of potentially fatal sequelae, including toxic metritis and laminitis. There are multiple strategies utilized by the veterinarian to achieve complete expulsion or removal of retained fetal membranes. The method selected for removal of retained fetal membranes is dependent on effectiveness, safety, cost, and convenience. Early intervention can prevent serious medical complications in the mare.
